Introduction

A hominid, six to ten feet tall, covered in hair, stands on two large feet, and has managed to stay undetected is unbelievable, but is not impossible. Bigfoot has become a figure of pop culture and mass conspiracy in recent years; however, the story of this creature goes back further than cheap t-shirts and fuzzy pictures. Mentions of a giant, bipedal creature can be found in many Indigenous tribe legends (Pyle). These legends describe this large creature as exhibiting aggressive behavior, having a human-like face, and wearing coarse brown hair (Coleman). There has been no shortage of tales since these legends; there are countless personal accounts of bigfoot sightings. One widespread theory states bigfoot could be the remaining population of Gigantopithecus Blacki (Townsend). The science community continues to investigate if these legends and stories can be true or just the product of overactive imagination.
There has been an influx of theories attempting to prove the existence of Bigfoot, two of which stand out among the rest: Native legends of wildmen and the scientific hypothesis connecting Bigfoot to Gigantopithecus blacki. To better understand these theories, it is important to examine them closely and determine their credibility.
